- Welcome to The Martial Art of Awareness -

The Norwegian Martial Art of Awareness school was established by Espen Andreassen in Oslo 2011 under supervision by the founder Grand Master Sam F.S. Chin and with help of fellow students like Vegard Winther and Zoltan Saghy who in time also become licensed instructors of the system.

After some years of grate success in Oslo we have all moved out of the capital city and are now offering classes at three different locations around Norway (see teachers and training hours).

The Martial Art of Awareness (I Liq Chuan®) is a Kung Fu system that cultivates consciousness based on Tai Chi and Chan (Zen) principles of non-resistance and present-moment awareness. By mastering the harmony of yin and yang, body structure, and three-dimensional movements, students discipline their Chi to build internal power, enhance the nervous system, and refine self-defense.

Training focuses on cultivating an "inner feel" that expresses externally through Chi Kung, Chin Na, and F’a Jing. Ultimately, practitioners apply this neutral, present state of mind to daily life, fostering harmony, self-control, and a clear understanding of cause and effect.

Testimonials

"Its a wonderful system, allowing me to clearly break down my techniques and cleaning them up into much more efficient and powerful movement."

"I have trained Martial Art for over 35 years, and through my search for better understanding of martial art I happened to stumble upon I Liq Chuan. Its a wonderful system, allowing me to clearly break down my techniques and cleaning them up into much more efficient and powerfull movement. The environment in the club (and system) encourage you to explore, think, discuss, and most importantly to feel. The feeling of an effective and effortless movement is a beautifull feeling and the instructors are able to (and happy to) not only to perform the movement, but guide you to do the same and more importantly to help you understand the principle behind so you can employ it to all your movements."

Testimonials

" Incredibly good training to sensitize them using his own body and mind together with a bunch of enthusiastic and generous people!"

Werner Lindgård
(Taekwondo Instuctor and Coach)

"I really enjoy having recently discovered this ILC club in Oslo. With many years experience in studying and teaching other martial arts, I am inspired and impressed by the the teaching method. Information is shared enthusiastically, in a well thought out format, and in a step by step approach that makes a lot of sense. Attention is given to the real fundamentals, rather than just form, right from the start. Also, the atmosphere in the classes is very friendly and constructive."

Atle Riise
Kashima Shin-Ryu Instructor, Aikido 2nd. Dan, I Liq Chuan Lv.1

"I have been practicing Japanese martial arts in many years and I felt there was something missing, when I trained I Liq Chuan I found out that's what was missing."

" Espen held morning training on the job. The training helped me to get firmly into the body before the workday started . During the workout went focus on all parts of the body after the tour so I was aware of how I was doing (not just in the head ) and experienced increased presence . Espen is an accomplished instructor and good to give you a-ha experiences! Exciting experience how simple movements and only slightly adjusting the center of gravity can make big differences . "

Espen Andreassen

Fredrikstad

Espen (b.1977) has over 40 years of martial art experiance and is Norways main MAA instructor. He grew up with Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee on the screen and with a deep fascination for Eastern philosophy (especially Taoism and Zen Buddhism).

His journey started at the age of 7 with Shotokan Karate in Fredrikstad. At the same time, he studied Muay Thai and Jeet Kune Do on his own.

When he was 15, he moved on to Tae Kwon Do for a short period of about two years.

At 19, he began practicing Yang Tai Chi and Jeet Kune Do. He also studyed Wing Chun with a private instructor. At 24, he started studying several Chinese styles at the Wutan and Pachi Tanglang schools. There he learned a number of styles, such as Chang Chuan, Tanglang Chuan, Chen Tai Chi Chuan, and Bagua Zhang, but he specialized in Baji Chuan and Pigua Zhang.

Espen led the east-side Oslo Wutan at Makrellbekken for a period before founding The Martial Art of Awareness Norway in Oslo in 2011.

Espen is an “indoor” student of GM Sam Chin, which means that he is not only a student of the system but has taken an oath to his teacher to carry on the art—something that also grants him access to private training and one-on-one guidance from GM Sam Chin. He also has a good relationship with the entire Chin family. Particularly noteworthy is that he has had many private training sessions with Master Hsin Chin.

Vegard Winther

Brumunddal

Vegard Winther (b. 1975) has practiced martial arts for nearly 40 years. He began with judo before taking up Shotokan Karate as a teenager, eventually earning a black belt. After eight years of karate, he explored several other martial arts and developed a particular passion for Chinese kung fu.

For many years, Vegard trained in Tanglang Chuan (Praying Mantis), Baji Chuan, Pigua Zhang, and Chen Tai Chi, as well as various forms of self-defense. Throughout this journey, he sought a deeper understanding of movement, balance, and body control — not simply a collection of techniques.

In 2011, Vegard met kung fu master Sam Chin and discovered I Liq Chuan – The Martial Art of Awareness. The system provided answers to many of the questions he had explored through earlier training, and I Liq Chuan has remained his main focus ever since.

Today, Vegard is a certified I Liq Chuan instructor. His classes welcome both complete beginners and experienced martial artists, with training adapted to the individual. The focus is on movement, balance, coordination, body awareness, and practical application in an inclusive learning environment.

Path of Martial Art of Awareness

Martial Art of Awareness also known as Zhong Xin Dao is the foundational essence of Chin Family I Liq Chuan designed  by GM Sam F.S. Chin. It is not an actual step by step process but the physical-mental reference to ensure that your practice is on the right path.  Following the path is critical to embodying the art.

The philosophy and concepts is the way to uphold the approach to understand things. The method of knowing; the way to know. How to attain the neutral.  You must change with change to know the truth, the reality. In order to change you must be neutral. Neutral is, present, is formless, is emptiness, and is the balance point.

With the mental concept of nothing to learn, and nothing to add or take away, one accepts the fact that in the moment they need only to realize and to recognize. Therefore, it is not a technique or form that we are training. It is the principles that we aim to recognize to see what it is.
